Miles Davis’ sessionography and discography are fiendishly complicated things. The following simplified list is designed for viewing at a glance the run of 1969-70 sessions which produced almost all of the ‘electric Miles’ era recordings with which John was involved: In A Silent Way (1969), Bitches Brew (1970), A Tribute To Jack Johnson (1971), Live-Evil (1971), Big Fun (1974), Get Up With It (1974). The one exception is On The Corner (1972), which was recorded, with John’s involvement, during June-July 1972. Some of the tracks from this period which were not released on the above albums slipped out on 1980s compilation LPs like Circle In The Round. For convenience, these compilations have been ignored. All of the material listed is available on CD on various expanded reissues/box sets of the original albums. Acquiring the three In A Silent Way / Bitches Brew / Jack Johnson ‘complete sessions’ box sets plus the CD reissue of Live-Evil and/or the 6CD The Cellar Door Sessions (with more of the live material from which Live-Evil was assembled) will provide almost all of the Miles Davis/John McLaughlin recordings.
